Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition

Dragon Age Origins

I picked this up for less than £5 on sale to see what all the fuss was about, as it seemed like a bargain. However, there are several issues with this game.

The map travelling animation takes forever and is absolutely infuriating. Once you actually have the power to decide where to go next, the pacing completely falls apart.
The combat isn’t anything special, just constant waves of enemies with the same few model types for pretty much every encounter. It requires no tactics or skill, it’s just chaos, and setting the AI conditions for combat never seems to work correctly. The combat is similar to Neverwinter Nights, and it becomes extremely boring extremely fast.
Furthermore, I am very disappointed with the graphics – they are one of the weakest and most off-putting elements of the entire game, which is disappointing for a Bioware game released in 2009. Previous games like Mass Effect (2007), and even Knights of The Old Republic (2003) had superior graphics. I don’t know how they could go so wrong with this one.

After playing DA:OUE for a few hours, I just couldn’t get into it. It all seemed too slow, and there is way too much filler combat with limited enemy model types, too many camera limitations, some very unmemorable characters, boring dialogue and dull quests which destroy any immersion. Simply put, I found that it just takes too much time and energy to play through, and the 14 hours I played left me burnt-out and unable to finish it. I couldn’t even face going back to try it again, which is regrettable as I did enjoy the story and wanted to finish it.

The story is fairly intriguing but progress is blocked with dull quests which break immersion.

Dislikes

The filler combat and the chaos of the battles removes any enjoyment from the game.
